How to get the latest humanitarian information on the earthquake in Haiti
Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The initial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater than magnitude 5.0.
Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed, from shantytown homes to national landmarks. It is still very early in the recovery effort, but millions are likely displaced, and thousands are feared dead as rescue teams from all over the world are now descending on Haiti to help where they are able.

UN - and related agencies - personnel sitting confortably in Rome (or elsewhere, but always very confortably) should be sent to Haiti ... Also, the hope is that all the money that will be donated won't end up in the pockets of those so called "humanitarian organizations", more worried to advert themselves than giving effective support to those poor people involved in disasters.

I can not speak for all UN agencies, the only thing I can say is from our agency, a large contingent of people has already left for Haiti from all parts of the world, mostly from Rome.
I am packing my bags now, and will be flying in on Tuesday. I will be setting up the support operations in the Dominican Republic so that aid can flow in fast and efficiently into the Haiti.
